About El Nido’s Teen Family Services

For more than two decades (1995–2020), El Nido was the largest provider of teen services in California.  


Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) 


Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) is a strengths-based case management program designed to support expectant and parenting youth. 

  • Services: Case managers meet one-on-one with youth to establish a caring relationship, identify the youth’s needs and interests, and offer support with accessing services, setting goals and planning for the future.  

  • Service Areas: South Los Angeles

  • Clients: Expectant or parenting youth (both mothers and fathers) can enroll up to the 22nd birthday (services can continue beyond age 22).  

  • Started: 1988.

  • Outcomes: Increased high school completion, higher education enrollment, and employment. Decreased unplanned pregnancies, improved health outcomes for parent and child. 

  • Funder: State of California, Department of Public Health, Maternal Child Adolescent Health​.

Cal-Learn

 ​

Cal-Learn is a statewide program for pregnant and parenting teens in the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program. It is designed to encourage pregnant and parenting teens to graduate from high school or its equivalent, become independent, and form healthy families. 

  • Services: Home-visits, comprehensive case management using a strengths-based, client-centered approach, financial supports including paid childcare, transportation, and school supplies, cash bonuses for school progress and high school graduation or its equivalent. 

  • Service Areas: San Fernando & Santa Clarita Valleys, South Los Angeles, Antelope Valley. 

  • Clients: Pregnant and parenting youth under age 19 who are receiving CalWORKS and have not yet graduated high school. 

  • Started: 1995. 

  • Outcomes: Increased high school completion, higher education enrollment, and employment. Decreased unplanned pregnancies, improved health outcomes for parent and child.   

  • Funder: County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Social Services.
